Ron Galella

„The paparazzo“ — a professional title that evokes associations with an obsessed image hunter, prepared to do anything for the perfect shot — is a notion that has been established and perpetuated extensively in both the tabloid press and popular culture. Ron Galella was not merely part of this myth-making; he helped shape it. Time Magazine and Vanity Fair have both described him as „the Godfather of the U.S. paparazzi culture.“Born in 1931 in New York City, Galella began photographing seriously during his service in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After studying at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles — funded through the sale of photographs from film premieres — he embarked on a career that would transform the relationship between celebrity and photography. With the camera as his instrument, he developed a form of photojournalism in which the boundary between documentation, presence and staging was constantly being negotiated. Andy Warhol, who counted Galella among his friends, described him as his favourite photographer.

His career was marked by controversy, not least the widely reported legal proceedings with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1972, which resulted in a restraining order. At the same time, many of the era’s greatest stars became recurring subjects in front of his camera — and in a kind of mutual game between photographer and public figure, even the resistance to being photographed became part of the narrative.

In this themed auction, Michael Jackson occupies a central place. Through Galella’s lens he emerges not only as a global superstar but as a symbol of modern celebrity culture. Among the auction’s catalogue numbers are photographs in which we as viewers can follow his journey from a young star to one of popular culture’s most recognisable figures — moments where public life and private life collide, and where the fascination with the person almost overshadows the individual behind the myth.
