Fine Art: Modern Art & Design 26 April
Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsinki presents Modern Art & Design! With over 300 lots, it is an impressive catalogue that is presented.
The fine art on offer is a concentrated survey of Finnish modernism up to the present day. From Tove Jansson to Marika Mäkelä, one might say. Mäkelä is today considered one of the greatest contemporary names in Finland, and her Flora & Fauna II is one of the auction’s highlights. Beside that work, Hans Christian Berg’s Visual Vortex – Orange Splash and Elga Sesemann’s Unga änglar are on show.
The applied arts section is generous and can boast both furniture and lighting classics as well as more unusual objects. In Eero Aarnio’s Ball Chair, Finnish – and indeed Swedish – design history is contained, as the example being sold is fitted with a telephone by Ericsson. Among the furniture, Carl Hörvik’s nursery cabinet from the 1920s, crowned by a fish, also stands out. Alongside the luminous beauties of Paavo Tynell and Lisa Johansson-Pape, a particularly rare floor lamp by Yrjö Kukkapuro with a red fibreglass shade is on offer. A turquoise blue PH 5/5 by Poul Henningsen is also included. Leading the ceramics section are Aune Siimes, Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg and Birger Kaipiainen. The last-named is represented by several dishes, one of his sought-after pearl birds and a pair of delightful figures with bell pendants. Among the glass, generous selections of works by Timo Sarpaneva, Kaj Franck and Tapio Wirkkala are on show. Welcome!
