Woodblock stories from Japan – Ukiyo-e from Edo and Meiji

Stockholms Auktionsverk presents a selection of Japanese colour woodblock prints by prominent artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Kunisada II, Kunisada III, Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Sadamasu, Toshikata Mizuno, and Yoshifuji, among others. Together, the works depict a world of historical figures and events, Kabuki theater, humorous scenes, and dramatic portrayals drawn from literature and folklore.

Ukiyo-e—which translates to “pictures of the floating world”—developed during the Edo period (1603–1868), an era of relative peace, economic growth, and flourishing urban culture. In cities such as Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto, there was widespread demand for images depicting contemporary pastimes, theater, and popular culture. As woodblock prints could be produced in multiple copies, they reached a broad audience.

With the onset of the Meiji period in 1868, Japan underwent rapid transformation driven by modernization and increased contact with the outside world. These changes were reflected in the art of the time; while traditional motifs persisted, new subjects and visual influences emerged. Artists such as Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige represent different facets of the earlier ukiyo-e tradition, whereas Kunichika, Kunisada II, Kunisada III, and Toshikata Mizuno carried the art form forward, incorporating modern elements during the Meiji period.

These Japanese woodblock prints are also the product of sophisticated craftsmanship. The images were printed using multiple woodblocks—one for each color and detail—which were combined to create a unified composition. The result is an art form that harmoniously blends precision, color, and storytelling.
