This spring’s major design auction – a century of design history
Stockholms Auktionsverk is proud to present this spring’s major design auction, The Design Sale—the most comprehensive design auction in the company’s history. Featuring over 600 carefully curated lots, the sale offers a rich and multifaceted selection in which international masterpieces meet the finest traditions of Nordic design.
The centrepiece of the auction is a rare table by the Swiss sculptor and designer Diego Giacometti. The work, “Berceau”, modèle aux chats, created in the 1970s, belongs to one of the artist’s most iconic series—the so-called cradle tables. With an estimate of SEK 3–4 million, it is the most valuable 20th-century table ever to come to auction in Sweden. Its exceptional rarity, artistic distinction, and distinguished provenance—having remained in a Swedish private collection since the early 1980s—further underscore its significance. The piece has been authenticated by leading experts in Paris in advance of the sale.
Among the sale’s further highlights is a chest of drawers by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, richly ornamented with botanical motifs inspired by Carl Lindman. Also of note is an elaborately decorated cabinet by the Norwegian artist Valentin Kielland, dated 1902. Executed in birch and spruce with finely carved and polychrome decoration, the cabinet reflects the artist’s background as a sculptor. The figurative door panels, depicting allegorical female figures, enhance its art-historical importance, with comparable works held in Norwegian museum collections.
Two further important works are a rare pair of chairs designed circa 1953 by Poul Kjærholm in collaboration with Chris Sørensen. Constructed in aluminium and steel—materials that were highly innovative at the time—the model was produced in a strictly limited edition of no more than 25 examples. One example is held in the collection of the Centre Pompidou.
Among the glass highlights is the vase “Fyra vindar” (Four Winds) by Vicke Lindstrand, produced at Orrefors in 1939. This optic-blown vase is richly decorated with engraved motifs and symbolic inscriptions, exemplifying the exceptional artistic standards of Swedish glassmaking during the period.
The ceramicist Hans Hedberg is represented by a substantial group of works, including a sculptural depiction of cherries and a monumental egg—both emblematic of his enduring fascination with organic forms. Wilhelm Kåge is also represented with the rare vase “Surrea” from the 1940s, produced at Gustavsberg.
Among contemporary designers, Mats Theselius is represented by a unique armchair, “Den svarta stolen” (The Black Chair) from 2003—an expression of his experimental and highly individual design practice.
The textile department offers an exceptionally rich selection of works by, among others, Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Barbro Nilsson, and Jean Lurçat. Highlights include rare rugs such as “Rektangeln”, as well as vibrant compositions from Barbro Nilsson’s oeuvre. The sale also features three examples from Agda Österberg’s vividly coloured carpets.
The silver section is distinguished by works from some of the Nordic region’s most eminent silversmiths, including Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, Wiwen Nilsson, and Georg Jensen. Olle Ohlsson’s unique silver suite, “Glittrande sommarsagor” (Shimmering Summer Tales), enchants with its narrative decoration across eleven bowls, forming a virtuosic sculptural ensemble with an estimate of SEK 1–1.5 million. Additional highlights include a chandelier set with coloured stones, an early fish dish from 1918, and a vase model exhibited at the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930.
The jewellery section features works by Wiwen Nilsson, Björn Weckström, and Sigurd Persson, with a significant private collection particularly showcasing the latter’s artistic range.
In summary, The Design Sale presents a rare opportunity to acquire significant and exceptional works by both international masters and leading Nordic designers. The auction spans a century of design history, where art, craftsmanship, and function converge in a truly remarkable offering.
