The Swedish-born photographer Rejlander acting himself and members of his family in several of the pictures. The other image and twenty-one wood-engravings in the text by Dr. Duchenne de Boulogne, Herr Kindermann and Dr. Wallich. Darwin´s only photographically illustrated work. This was the first higly successeful use of the collotype process of Ernest Edwards. First edition published London 1872, editions in French and America were issued, all of which have illustrations printed with local variants of the collotype process.
