Small 4:o (263x169). 2 maps, 10 mounted albumen print (90x80) by John P. Soul (all, 1 tissue gard paper missing), and some text illustrations.
Publisher´s gilt cloth, somewhat worn, some spotting to upper cover, some fading to covers, gilt spine, small damages at head and foot, all edges gilt. Old inscription on first endpaper.
Second edition, with two added chapters"The Yosemite in 1872" and "Recent Earthquakes".
Even if John Soule, a Boston photographic publisher, is identified as the photographer on the title-page, there is a possibility that the images were created by local photographers.
"The photographic illustrations are excellent and includes some unusual views" (Farquhar).
The first edition was published in 1871, and a third more extended than the second, also in 1872.
