Contemporary full calf, worn, gilt spines with red and blue labels (rubbed at part two and three) and raised bands, cracked hinges and some old repairs, red edges. Five volumes. Swedish Royal provenance, with the blue library stamps of king Karl XV as crown prince (Sjögren pp. 294f, fig. 439 and 440). Text with hole in inner top margin through the first 20 leaves in part three and four, somewhat clumsy repair in part three and beginning of part four. Some minor foxing and spotting, slight dampstain. 5 volumes.
The so called "Trevoux" edition of Bayle, which is an appreciated, but de facto pirate-edition of the fourth edition of 1730. Added to this "fifth" edition is abbé le Clercs extensive comments at the end of each volume and the complete text to "David".
Karl XV (1826-72) was king of Sweden from 1859.
