Worn publisher´s clothspine with printed boards. Spine cloth to volume I loose and fragmented, tears and som loss in spine to volume II. Foxing throughout, minor stains, some tears and losses of paper in margins, some damp in margins. Exlibris of William H. Ludlow. 2 volumes.
First edition. Rare, but in need of repair. Spine fragments to volume I separately. Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884), American linguist, diplomat, missionary and Sinologist. 1848-51 he was the editor of The Chinese Repository, a leading Western journal published in China.
